Steven Character Discussion

One thing I love about Steven is that he develops into an awesome character as the series goes on. I will be honest, in the earlier episodes, I found Steven more annoying than anything. But, he grows into an awesome character who just continues to grow and become such an asset to the Crystal Gems.

I had the same thought, I didn't really like Steven at first but hes rubbed on me now. I like how every episode Steven develops more and more, I cant wait till more episodes are made so that we can see how he ends up.

I like that he's still portrayed as a child, just a child that's had to grow up REALLY fast because of all the serious stuff that's happened to and around him. But he's still silly and innocent and all that but like with the Gems continuously poofing and reforming, he talks about getting used to it. He literally said he was getting used to seeing his surrogate moms die. But he asked if it was weird that he was getting used to it. It's played off like a joke but when you think about it it's quite sad how well Steven understands his slow desensitization to the Gems constantly getting "killed" but as he is still innocent he's not sure if it's a bad thing or not and need reassurance.

I just really like how the writers handle Steven.

i also really like the fact that we really are in the same boat as steven, knowledge-wise, about all of the gems and homeworld and everything. i like that we can experience the small moments of information through his childlike perspective, to see his perceptions but know that we can sometimes see the larger implications from our distanced viewings.

idk, i didn't really feel annoyed by him in the beginning; like pearl said, he's still portrayed as a child, and more than that, a child who kind of doesn't really have a lot of discipline, if you think about it. i mean, i think he's being contrasted sharply against connie, at least in the very beginning, where her parents are super controlling and disciplinary and the gems are, you know, adopted mothers.

I saw a theory on Tumblr that Steven is being portrayed as Autistic which honestly I think fits really well with his personality and how he tends to perceive things.

I'm not so sure. I'm autistic myself, and while he does share a lot of traits that I have, he is able to make friends easily, among other things, so I don't think so.

Anyway, when I first saw the show, I was convinced I'd hate Steven, but I really like him! He's not unrealistically smart, he makes mistakes, but doesn't come off as a gigantic screw-up, he actually matures throughout the series while still managing to retain his original personality, his interactions with Connie are super adorable, and he actually has a personality, interests, hobbies, strengths, flaws, weaknesses, etc.

I didn't find Steven annoying, at least not for very long. Definitely by the second episode I loved the boy.

@Pearl: As another autistic person, I don't feel that Steven is autistic myself (I just don't feel it), but don't think you're wrong if you're also autistic, or if the person who created the post is autistic (which they probably are if they're saying that). Autistic people are no monolith, and there are many ways to be autistic! I support all autistic headcanons made by autistic people, regardless on if I agree with them or not.

My opinion is that if you think he's autistic, then that's your headcanon, and I support that, even though I personally disagree.

It's not really my headcanon I just saw it on Tumblr xD I can't really give an opinion on it because while my little brother has Asperger's, I've never been close to someone with full autism, therefore I don't really know much about it besides what I've learned in Psychology classes.

I just thought it made sense in the "he sees the world differently from others" aspect but now that you guys point out that he's not socially inept I can see what you mean. *shrugs*

It's okay! I have an autistic headcanon for a Pretty Cure character because she reacts to situations the way I've seen autistic people do, or have experienced myself (I'm looking at you, Hime Shirayuki, which is why I love you so much!). I'm not obsessed with headcanons like other people, though.

Anyway, back on topic, Steven is adorable!
