Gem and Earth concepts of Genders

Since Gems are definitely an alien species in the show, and all of the Gems we've been introduced to are called female, I was wondering if they were just physically ambiguous but gendered as female or maybe...Gems have different versions of male and female that aren't easily visible to the naked eye.

And by that I mean that there could be different genders other than female in gem culture, but by Earth standards they all would fall under female anyway, so it's impossible for anyone who's not a gem to tell. The gems themselves don't care about what the Earth people label them as, so every character is considered a girl.

For all we know, the difference between male, female, or any other gender could be purely based on gem shape or something random. Gems can shape-shift, so they would have to use something fixed to determine it if they even do so. And gems usually don't reproduce like Earth people do, so sexual differences never came up between them until the Gems started interacting with humans.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I've seen that gems are technically genderless (though I don't know the source for this. If there is one, please share it!). They very well could be genderless and for whatever reason, the gems we know (thus far) have all chosen Earth female genders for themselves.

I'm sure gems probably have a different concept going on for genders and probably have more than two genders. This is Rebecca Sugar after all that we're talking about. Not to mention, look at Jasper. Jasper is pretty androgynous if we're honest. Jasper could be another gender or agender and we're just using female pronouns for them because we're used to the gems we know being female gendered. I'm sure androgynous Jasper is on purpose.

We also have Steven who is not your traditional boy - he's very in-touch with his feminine side thanks to being Rose Quartz's son.

I feel like there's a couple things going on here: Gems do have a different concept of gender but the ones we have seen prefer our female-genders. I think Rebecca Sugar may be doing this on purpose to give us strong female character heroes similar to that of Sailor Moon as well as to not conform to traditional gender roles that we are used to as demonstrated by the characters mentioned above. Plus, I also think that using female-genders for the gems and Steven being a boy makes for a special/unique concept for the gems and the show because the gems openly just choose female genders on Earth and don't exactly choose male. So here we have Steven, running around as the first or highly, highly uncommon male gem.

I dunno. I feel like I'm getting redundant, haha.

Edit: also notice, our Crystal Gems are lacking boobs (except for Rose Quartz???). Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl don't exactly have those and they're meant to be adults, soooo....

Hm, that is an interesting fact about Rose. Did she just like looking like that? Did she always have breasts before coming to Earth, or was that a later cosmetic change she made on purpose to better fit Earth standards?

And Jasper is another case of being ambiguous, along with Pearl. They're called female through our lens (aka Steven's lens), but who knows what they consider themselves in gem terms that humans wouldn't understand anyway?

It's really debatable. There's a lot of stuff about Gems and Homeworld that we have no idea of.

This is true. There's a lot we don't know - a lot that's open to our imaginations. But this is a really good question, actually.

It'll be nice to see what the gems might have looked like before they came to earth, also it might be funny to see what the gems think or themselves, either female or just gender less.

The gems are non-binary, I believe it was confirmed by the shows creators. It just happens to be that their non-binary resembles the concept of female gender identity that we have on Earth so the gems have more or less adopted that since many languages are gender based. 

Besides, it's probably better than being called "it", right?
